Abstract

When an infant presents with cyanosis which is not associated with respiratory distress, methemoglobinemia should always be suspected. Most of the acquired methemoglobinemia cases are due to local anesthetics in clinical practice and the methemoglobinemia level can be potentially harmful. Here we report a 36-day old infant with % 54 of methemoglobin level after the use of a local anesthetic agent for circumcision. Clinicians and parents must be aware that a topical anesthetic cream has this potential adverse effect. More studies are needed before routine use of topical anesthetic cream.

Topikal anestezik krem uygulamas?na sekonder methemoglobinemi: olgu sunumu

Solunum s?k?nt?s?yla ili?kili olmayan siyanoz ile ba?vuran s?t ?ocu?unda methemoglobinemi mutlaka d???n?lmelidir. Burada s?nnet i?in kullan?lan lokal anestezik madde sonras?nda methemoglobin d?zeyi % 54 olan 36 g?nl?k s?t ?ocu?u sunulmu?tur.
