Cord blood banking: biological insurance(?)

Abstract

<p>Cord blood (CB) is rich in haematopoietic stem cells, which restore haematopoetic stem cell function in patients suffering from malignancies, inherited metabolic and immunological and bone marrow failure diseases. Cord blood can be collected at no risk to the donor and stored for future use. In recent years, families may be vulnerable to emotional marketing at the time of birth of a child and may look for advice. Since there is no accurate estimates of the likelihood of children to need their own stored cells exists, it is difficult to recommend that parents store their children?s cord blood. Therefore private storage of CB as ?biological insurance? is unwise. Banking should be considered if there is a family member with a current possible disease that must undergo stem cell transplantation. Because of the investigational status and high risk for its potential abuse, a policy should be developed fort he safety and welfare of the population.</p>
