The role of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis

Abstract
<p>This study has been carried out on 24 newborns who were preliminary diagnosed as neonatal sepsis in the NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) as well as on 23 healthy newborns at the Medical aculty Hospital of Gaziantep University to investigate the role of IL-6 and CRP concentrations in early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis. Serum IL-6 concentrations of the newborns with sepsis (56?58 pg/ml) were significantly higher than the control group (13?10 pg/ml) (p<0.05). In early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, sensitivity and specifity of CRP were 75% and 95%; sensitivity and specifity of IL-6 were 58% and 78% respectively. In summary, the data of our study was not found diagnostic in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis alone. By using IL-6 and CRP as diagnostic criteria on the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis, sensitivity and specifity would be as high as 83% and 78%, respectively. We believe that combination of IL-6 and CRP as biological markers are more helpfull in the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis.</p>
