The approach to hypertension in childhood

Abstract

<p>stimated prevalence of hypertension in children is lower than in adults. However, hypertension is an important clinical problem in pediatrics, and its definition, etiology and management differ from that in adults in several major respects. Optimal determination of blood pressure in children requires use of appropriate techniques and devices. xtensive investigations are necessary to diagnose the cause in some cases. Diagnostic studies should be individualized and should follow clinical clues where possible. Management of hypertensive children require a comprehensive approach incorporating patient and family education, nonpharmacological measures and antihypertensive medications. This article reviews detection, evaluation and management of high blood pressure in children and adolescents.</p>
