Retrospective analysis of the cases with complaint of constipation

Abstract

<p>Constipation is one of the most common symptoms in childhood. It is present in 10-25 % of children who are referred to pediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics. In this study, we retrospectively evaluated 269 cases who were referred for constipation to our outpatient clinic between December 1994-December 2003; in respect to clinical improvement, coexistant pathologies and response to treatment. ifty one percent of the patient were males. The age range was between 2 months and 16 years. Before referral, constipation had existed for on average of 18 months and the defecation frequency was one in every 3 days. Twenty-seven percent of the patients have had anal fissura, 16% encopresis, 4% enuresis, 1.4% gastroesophageal reflux, 2.9% urinary tract infection and also one case had hypothyroidism and another one had Hirschsprung disease. Nineteen patiens (%7) were referred to psychiatry clinics. We could only follow 124 patients (46%) who were given laxative treatment and / or dietary recommendations and we observed full clinical response within 6 weeks except for 6 cases. In conclusion, after excluding the organic causes, dietary changes should be recommended to all patients with constipation and if there is no response to diet, medical treatment should be considered.</p>

Bu ?al??mada Aral?k 1994 ve 2003 tarihleri aras?nda poliklini?imize kab?zl?k yak?nmas? ile getirilen 269 olgu klinik seyir, e?lik eden patolojiler ve tedaviye yan?t a??s?ndan retrospektif olarak de?erlendirildi. Olgular?n ya?lar? 2 ay ile 16 ya? aras?nda de?i?mekte olup %51?i erkekti. Olgular?n ba?vurudan ?nceki kab?zl?k yak?nma s?releri ortalama 18 ay, d??k?lama s?kl??? ortalama 3 g?nde bir idi. Olgular?n %27?sinde anal fiss?r, %16?s?nda enkoprezis, %4??nde en?rezis, %1,4??nde gastro?zefageal refl?, %2,9?unda idrar yolu enfeksiyonu, bir olguda hipotiroidi, bir olguda da Hirschsprung hastal??? mevcuttu. Olgular?n 19 tanesi (%7) psikiyatri poliklini?ine y?nlendirilmi?ti. Diyet ?nerileri ve/veya laksatif tedavisi ba?lanan hastalar?n 124??n?n (%46) poliklinik izlemi mevcut olup, 6 olgu (%4,8) hari? di?er hastalarda 6 haftal?k s?re i?inde tam klinik yan?t al?nm??t?.
